About photographing snakes

Snakes are one of my favorite subjects. Here are two photos from the same photo shoot from about two weeks ago. This first one is made with a 150 mm macro lens. Even if the reach of the lens is pretty good for aggressive snakes, I personally think it's a bit too long for such harmless snakes as Grass Snakes. Off course when making an image like this, a closeup mugshot, it's nice that you don't need to touch the face of the subject with your glass. Even though I still would prefer a shorter tele lens, maybe 105 mm or even 70 mm for snake photography.

Even if it's pretty fun to shoot closeups of snakes its nice to have some variation sometimes. That's why I love my 10-20 mm lens. It focuses enough close so that you can have the animal in the the foreground and show something of its habitat. Of course with this type of a lens you have to go extremely close to your subject, so your fingers are in danger. Choose a timid and non-venomous snake otherwise it is better to use a little bit longer focal lenght.
